Saudi Arabia is officially known as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This arid country is located on the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. Saudi Arabia has an abundant history, and is home to two of Islam’s holiest cities, Medina and Mecca. It has more oil than any other country in the world, and is building the world’s tallest skyscraper.

Our banknote this week is Saudi Arabia’s 5 Riyals pNEW BNB141 2020. This is a polymer note with Arabic and English text. On the front are images of Shaybah oil refinery, and King Salman bin Abdulaziz. The back of the note shows a field of flowers with mountains in the background, and Saudi Arabia’s national emblem.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz is the 25th son of King Abdulaziz who was the founder of Saudi Arabia. He is the current King of Saudi Arabia, and was the Prime Minister from 2015 until September 27, 2022. King Abdulaziz is 86 years old, and currently one of the oldest living monarchs in the world. It is said that his son, Mohammad bin Salman, the current crown prince is the power behind the throne.

Shaybah oil refinery is located in Rub’ al Khali. It refines crude oil into petroleum products. Shaybah produces about 1 million barrels of oil per day. The facility has living quarters for 1,000 workers, its own fire station, recreation areas, airport, and workshops. During the day the temperature can rise to 50 degrees Celsius (122 F) in Rub’ al Khali.

Saudi Arabia’s national emblem was adopted in 1950. The emblem shows two crossed swords with a palm tree. The swords represent the Kingdom of Hejaz, and Sultanate of Najd which were united in 1926. These two kingdoms were dual monarchies ruled by King Abdulaziz.
