This week’s banknote is Philippines’ 2 Piso p166a (BNB1025a) 1981. It is a blue and orange colored paper banknote with Filipino text. On the front of the note is Jose Rizal, and Bangko Sentral NG Pilipinas seal. The back shows images of soldier raising their rifles, and Emilio Anguinaldo declaring independence from Spain. The watermark is Jose Rizal.

Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist, writer, and ophthalmologist. Rizal wanted political reform, and was very active towards the end of the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. He wrote several poems and essays inspiring the Philippine Revolution; however, he did not take part in the planning of the revolution. Rizal was executed by the Spanish colonial government for rebellion after the start of the revolution. He is considered a national hero in the Philippines.

Emilio Anguinaldo was a military leader, and the first president of the Philippines. He led Philippine’s military forces against Spain during the Philippine Revolution. As seen on the back of this backnote, Anguinaldo was the one who declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898 from his own balcony in Kawit, Cavite. He is somewhat of a controversial figure in the Philippines. Some consider him a national hero, while others blame him for the deaths of other Filipino leaders in the Philippines Revolution.

This brightly colored banknote displays Jose Rizal, and Emilio Anguinaldo declaring independence from Spain. The current price for this note is $3.00, but it is subject to change. To see more about this note or other notes like it, head to our website.
