This week we are featuring a banknote from Colombia. Colombia is located in the northern region of South America. With this country’s close location to the equator, it doesn’t experience any real change in seasons, and keeps a tropical climate all year round. Colombia is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, and was first inhabited around 12,000 BCE.
Colombia 200 Pesos Oro p429d (BNB967k) 1991 is a paper note with Spanish text. On the front of this green and purple note are images of a church, Jose Celestino Mutis, and Von Humboldt coat of arms. The back of the note shows the Von Humboldt coat of arms again, bank seal, Claustro del Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario, and coat of arms. The watermark is Jose Celestino Mutis.
Jose Celestino Mutis was a priest, botanist, mathematician and author. Originally born in Spain in 1732, he arrived in Colombia in 1761. In Colombia, Mutis focused on his botanical studies and continued to practice medicine. Additionally, he led an expedition sponsored by the king to discover and study flora, fauna and minerals. Mutis is seen as an influential figure in the Spanish American Enlightenment.
Claustro del Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario which is also known as Universidad del Rosario. This university was founded by Archbishop of Santa Fe Friar Cristobal de Torres y Motones in 1653. The Archbishop was given permission by King Felipe IV to teach theology, medicine and philosophy. Universidad del Rosario is still an important part of Colombian culture and academics. It boasts several notable graduates including 28 Colombian presidents.
