Travel with us as we take a look at a banknote from Angola. Angola is a Central African country with a varied terrain. It was the last Portuguese colony in Africa to gain its independence. The country is rich in natural resources, agriculture and picturesque beaches.
This week’s banknote is Angola 5 Kwanzas p151A (BNB543a) 2017. The 5 Kwanzas banknote is a paper note and has Portuguese text. On the front of the note is Jose Eduardo dos Santos and Antonio Agostinho Neto. The back of the note displays Angola’s coat of arms, and Ruacana waterfalls. The watermark is The Thinker.
Antonio Agostinho Neto was a politician and poet. Neto led the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola in the war for independence against Portugal. He became the first president of Angola from 1975 until his death in 1979. Neto’s health had been failing for years, and died while undergoing surgery for cancer.
Jose Eduardo dos Santos was the president of Angola after Antonio Agostinho Neto. Santos took office in 1979 and remained in office until 2017. Santos was also a member of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. Santos stepped down from the presidency after holding the position for 37 years. He was succeeded by another member of the Popular Movement Liberation of Angola.
Ruacana waterfall is part of the Kunene River which borders Angola and Namibia. The waterfall is 390 feet high and 2,300 feet wide. The Ruacana waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in Africa, and can be better appreciated during rainy season. At the base of the falls are two hydro-electric power plants.
