Travel with us as we look at a note from Eritrea. Eritrea is a small country located in the Horn of Africa, and borders Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti, and the Red Sea. The country’s name is derived from the Greek name for the Red Sea. Eritrea gained independence in 1993 and has had the same president since its inception. President Isaias has said that his people will wait about four decades before they can hold a presidential election. Meanwhile, the last local elections were back in 2004.

For this week’s blog-ette, we’re looking at Eritrea 10 Nakfa p11a 2012. This is a brown, orange and green paper note. The note has English, Arabic and Tigrinya text. On the front of the note is Eritrean fighters raising a flag, triptych portrait, and a camel. The back of the note displays a camel, a train on Obel River bridge near Massawa, and the bank logo. The watermark for this note is the head of a camel.

On the front and center of the note is an image of three girls. This image is called a triptych portrait which is three separate images displayed together. The significant part of the triptych portrait is that the three images are divided; however, the images work together to create something more.

Eritrea started as an Italian colony in the 1880’s, and remained one until the Italians were defeated in WWII in 1941. They temporarily became a British protectorate, and then were a state of the Federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea. This arrangement was supposed to remain for ten years; however, the people of Eritrea grew restless under Ethiopian rule, and an independence movement began. The Eritrean War of Independence started in September 1961 and didn’t end until May 1991.
