Travel with us to the South American country Venezuela. The official name is Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela which was adopted in 1999, and changed to honor Simon Bolivar. Venezuela has an abundant and diverse wildlife, and several national parks. The country is home to Lake Maracaibo which is one of the largest lakes in South America, and the lake is estimated to be 20-36 million years old. Lake Maracaibo is known for an interesting weather phenomenon known as Catatumbo lightning. Catatumbo lightning can cause up to 28 strikes of lightning per minute.
This week we are looking at Venezuela 100 Bolivares p106a 2018 banknote. The 100 Bolivares note was a Banknote of the Year Nominee in 2018. It is purple in color and has Spanish text. The front of the note shows Ezequiel Zamora. The back of the note shows Venezuela’s coat of arms, northern muriqui monkey, and Guatopo National Park. The watermark is Simon Bolivar and electrotype BCV. This 100 Bolivares note is a vertical banknote.
Ezequiel Zamora was a Venezuelan soldier and a leader of the Federalists in the 19th century. Zamora was a member of the liberal party that was in opposition to the landowners. He advocated for equality and benefits to help the poor. Zamora is most known for his involvement in the Federal War, where he led many successful campaigns. However, in January 1860, Zamora was killed in an attack in the city of San Carlos. There is some mystery around his death as some believe that he was killed by his own side.
Simon Bolivar was a Venezuelan military and political leader. He was born into an aristocratic family and lost his parents at an early age. His uncle became his guardian, and he was given a tutor who taught him about liberty, human rights and politics. This tutor would later become pivotal for Bolivar’s decision to start a revolution based on liberty and freedom. Bolivar became president of Venezuela twice, and president of Bolivia, Columbia and Peru.
