Cyprus is a small island country found in the Mediterranean Sea and is officially called the Republic of Cyprus. Human habitation of Cyprus dates back to the paleolithic period. It is home to the oldest manufactured wine in the world, and was once a gift from the Roman General Marc Anthony to Cleopatra.

This week we are taking a look at a stunning note from this beautiful island nation. Cyprus 1 Pound p60d 2004 is brown, orange, green and black. The front of the note has Greek and Turkish text, a Cypriot girl dressed in traditional costume, Cyprus’ coat of arms, a map of the island nation, and birds. The back of the note has English text, an image of houses in Lefkara village, and handcrafted items. The watermark for this note is a bust of Aphrodite.

Traditional Cypriot clothing is typically made from cotton and silk, and was very conservative. A Cypriot woman’s clothing includes a “saiya” which is a dress with an opening in the front and the sides, and was worn with a shirt. Women would wear this with long pants that covered the whole leg and was embroidered at the bottom. The saiya varied based on where the woman lived and what tasks she performed throughout her day.

The coat of arms of the Republic of Cyprus is simple but elegant. It shows a dove carrying an olive branch over the year 1960. The dove with the olive branch symbolizes peace, and 1960 is the year of Cypriot independence from British rule. The colors used are copper-yellow, green and white.

Lefkara village is located in a mountainous region of Cyprus and is split into Pano Lefkara and Kato Lefkara (high and lower). This village is known around the world for it’s lacework and silver. These crafts have been practiced since Venetian times, and legend says that Leonardo Da Vinci visited the village and purchased a lace altar cloth for the Milan Cathedral. Visitors can learn more about these crafts at the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing.
