For this blog-ette, we are going to look at a lovely multicolored note from Italy. On the front of the 1,000 Lire p114c note is the Seal of the Maritime Republics and Maria Montessori. On the back of the note is a girl watching a boy write in a notebook, and the penal code.

The Maritime Republics are also known as Merchant Republics. These maritime city-states go back to the Middle Ages and are part of the Mediterranean coast. The Maritime Republic includes Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Amalfi, Ragusa (now Dubrovnik), Gaeta, Ancona, and the Republic of Noli (now part of Savona). Most notably, these city-states built ships for trade and for protection. They also played a large role in the crusades.

Maria Montessori was an Italian educator and physician. Most of us probably recognize her last name, Montessori, for her philosophy and method of education. Some popular elements of Montessori education are mixed-age classrooms, students being able to choose their activities, and long blocks of uninterrupted class time. Research of Montessori education have been mainly positive which explains why it is still used, and used in many different countries.

On the back of the note, in the bottom right section is a portion of Italy’s penal code. “La legge punisci i fabricatori e gli spacciatori di biglietti falsi.” This roughly translates to “the law punishes the fabricators and dealers of false tickets.” Italy’s penal code, also called Rocco Code was established during Mussolini’s administration. It remains in effect mainly because a revised code cannot be agreed upon.

I appreciate the many different aspects of this note. Like many banknotes, this note gives a glimpse of its wonderful country.
